1 - Chicane & The Thrillseekers - Autumn Tactics (Bryan Kearney & Mike Nichol Treatment)

Back with the sequel to his Ribbon Sessions, Bryant P showcases some of the latest Trance only a few people can get their hands on. After giving the album a listen, I do have to say, it’s cruising worthy, on repeat. There are very few Trance sets that actually have Trance in this community, most are filled with second rate Eurotrance. But this set delivers. My favorite track would have to be the Matt Zo remix of Mark Pledger and Matt Hardwick’s Fallen Tides. I actually got a chance to ask him a few questions about himself and the state of Trance, no pun intended Armin.

iDrumatik = Me, Sensation FC = Bryant

iDrumatik: First off, why the name Bryant P? Of course I know it’s your name but, why not a different alias?
SensationFC: Well, when i first started off producing i did use an alias. The most pathetic one at best, but hey i was only 14 at the time haha. I went from using Dj Euphoria but then i came to choosing Final Call
SensationFC: I actually got Final Call out of the back of a Super Street magazine really. I decided to use my real name because i wanted to be more recognizable
iDrumatik: Are you currently using any other alias’ other than Bryant P?
SensationFC: There was one that i was planning to use and that would be “Legatia”
iDrumatik: Meaning?
SensationFC: It meant Legacy in latin, and using that alias was for my more driving clubbier style
iDrumatik: Out of all the genres of Electronica, why Trance? It’s not exactly the most popular in the US.
SensationFC: Well, i was first introduced to it when i was around 11. My cousin showed me some tracks and i liked the way they sounded. Also the radio station played cheezy euro tracks on fridays and saturdays. That caught my attention as well. But i did grew up listening to “Dj Mystik and Dj Epic” until i actually found the european side of it. I really didn’t like music when i was younger because i didn’t find it interesting at all. When i heard trance, it opened up a whole new world for me
iDrumatik: Sort of like marijuana huh, a gateway drug…or so some say.
SensationFC: haha yes, i also listened to a bit of Chicago Hard House and the typical french house too.
iDrumatik: Do you think Trance has a place on mainstream radio? We’ve already seen a couple of Eurotrance tracks playing on the radio like Cascada and with the new emerging obsession with Daft Punk, do you think they are paving the way for Electronica music?
SensationFC: damn
SensationFC: thats a hard question
iDrumatik: answer to the best of your ability
iDrumatik: or you can save it for later
SensationFC: I honestly think no. It really has to do with the public people really. Trance music is more sorta an intelligent form of music. Too many of the trance fans sit there and dictate whats good and whats not. That made our scene moreso of an elitest genre. The eurodance/europop thing is more accessible to the public because it allows one thing. A simple rush to just dance and get on with whatever you’re doing. Trance is getting opened up more in certain areas of the states, but it really depends on your area. Don’t expect to see the latest best tracks playing in the middle of Kansas.
iDrumatik: So tell me about this new set, Ribbon Sessions 2. What feel were you striving for when you were finding tracks?
SensationFC: Well i didn’t want to be the next Armin or next Ferry. I simply hated listening to sets that started off slowly and such. I don’t really want to make a lifetime story by playing other peoples music. In Ribbon Sessions, i knew that people loved vocals. It’s more accessible obviously, but i also wanted it to be really clubby. When i choose tracks for my set, i try to find not just the newest tracks but ones that would constantly make people dance. I wouldn’t want to stand on the dancefloor and have my hands up for 5 hours straight when the breakdown comes.
iDrumatik: Yeah, that is truly one of the downfalls of trance, the long very drawn out breakdowns. Do you try to mix around that?
SensationFC: It was great back in the earlier years. Now it’s overrated. I try to mix around it sometimes, it really depends on the feel of the track. If it has a really dirty bassline and awesome percussion but a sorta lengthy break, i’ll try my best to add interest over it.
iDrumatik: You’ve been on 3GN for a while now and have established yourself as a producer learning n00bs can learn from. Does anyone in particular show any promise?
SensationFC: hell no, everyone sucks ! joking everyone! don’t get your panties in a bunch. Umm, I found that a couple can be promising. David Le actually is getting better. He doesn’t nag me and constantly ask for advice but whatever i give him he takes it and applies it best to his knowledge. I give him props on that. But i honestly think that everyone needs to quit the bandwagon issue. All i see in the threads is basically the same remix from 8 other members. BE ORIGINAL PLEASE? i mean if you’re going to remix something, remix it not only because you think its just for fun. Remix it because you actually have faith in yourself that you can make it into something way different than anybody else. Different is always good. Limiting yourself to one genre won’t get you anywhere.
iDrumatik: Where would you like to see yourself in the upcoming years? I know you’re already signed, do you think you’ll be playing sold out events in Europe anytime soon?
SensationFC: Well not anytime soon, but i would love to be over there playing some gigs! who wouldn’t?! In a few years from now, i would really want to be established on different labels and getting my name out there even more. I already know plenty of professional people in the scene and that also helps as well. Maybe in a few years i could bother thinking about starting a label or maybe not heh. I also want to broaden my horizons over certain music as well. I’m not going to make trance for my entire life, so i might as well put my skills to other things too. This would include writing short little movie scores and theme music for video games.
iDrumatik: Sounds like you want to stay within the realm of music. Well, thanks for taking the time for this interview, I hope you make it to Ibiza! And don’t forget me!
SensationFC: No problem! thanks to you and everyone else on 3gn for supporting my music as well =]. Now back to watching Armin Only Live!

Some of you may have heard about Earth Hour. Basic summary is that major cities around the world will turn off the lights of landmarks and other places around the city for one hour to help send out a message of easing the use of energy. It all started in Australia and is also a movement supported by major corporations. Heck, McDonald’s even doing it. is I visited Google today and they too support this movement.

Because of this, we at 3GN will also support the movement by locking all forums. Since 3gn is expanded across the globe, stretching from Boston to Brisbane, we will host the event for a whole day. It will start at 8PM tonight
(Saturday) and end 8PM tomorrow night (Sunday). With not being able to post, whats the point of going on 3GN? I hope the members will take a part in this event. Also, the private forums will be restricted to ALL members, so that leechers may not ruin it for us. We’d like to thank you ahead of time for your cooperation.

You guys may think a whole day is long, but I’m sure our veteran members have been through worse, when 3GN was down for 3 months. Once again, thank you for your participation and cooperation. Also, please don’t use the Chatbox.

I had a chance to speak with Jami, Revolution Boi, about the current releases in mixes/sets and how he has been cheated out of gigs by DJ’s who bring laptops to the party and use Acid Pro to please a crowd. Well, his latest CD, Nagisa, is a prime example of how live sets are and how they have always been done, live.

It looks like everyone has been trying to put out sets but they are all just failed attempts to bring something new to the table save a couple of albums. Tired of seeing all of the Hardstyle sets, hint hint, Revolution Boi decided to take another route in trying to introduce a more eclectic sound and Nagisa is one of them. The tracklisting is phenomenal and who doesn’t appreciate a little Cyber-Trance here and there?

After listening the first track after the Intro, it brought me back to when I first heard Cyber-Trance which was Ayumi Hamasaki’s Ayu-Trance. A few years ago while chatting with him on the Hypnotika Forums, I remember him telling me why he chose the alias, Revolution Boi, simply to revolutionize the sound of music - And Jami, you’re well on you’re way.

About one and a half weeks ago, Chicago-bred Common released his latest video for the single, I Want You, off of his latest album, Finding Forever. The video, directed by newcomer Kerry Washington (I Think I Love My Wife, Fantastic Four: RotSS), has many of the top artists right now, such as Kanye West and Alicia Keys, and even pro tennis player, Serena Williams. Kerry Washington even stars in her directorial debut and makes a pretty solid effort.

After releasing 3 singles off of Finding Forever (The Game, The People, Drivin’ Me Wild), it’s obvious Common shines through with I Want You. The whole R&B, smooth vibe is there in full effect. It is definitely more mature and classy than any of his other videos. I’ll leave my overview at that.

You have to check it out and decide for yourself.

The new song is titled I.V. and pronounced Ivy. The song also stands for the roman numeral IV which makes it fitting seeing how the song is featured on the credits of the ending of Saw IV. The song brings back the old school heavy/speed metal feel of X-Japan with some elements of Tears, a ballad from X-Japan that was also featured on the Korean movie soundtrack, Windstruck. There is no set date for the release of the full song yet but if you would like to listen to the new song, I’ll leave you with a 30 second clip.

Even as a huge fan of his, I still found his latest album a let down - bar one or two songs such as: Beaten Thursdays and The Class of 73 Bells. It’s like his attitude to making music on his last two albums was shifted to “Throw enough shit at the fan and some will stick”. Since I can’t bear to watch the “car-accident” that is Preparations, I blindly reminisce on the good old days of Prefuse 73 with classic albums such as Surrounded By Silence and One Word Extinguisher.

My all time favourite song is, without a doubt, Perverted Undertone. This is a classic piece of Prefuse that always manages to relax me and tease me enough to follow the song up with more of his tracks.

If you’re “Prefuseless”, try listening to this song. I guarantee you’ll lap it up…

Right when I heard their single To Breathe in an Undertow I was hooked. The song encompasses elements from Screamo to Post-Hardcore to Emo. Most screaming bands tend to scream a little too much but Lights of the Aurora does it just about right. A few months later, they added their second single, Et Cetera which gives you the same feel as their latter single. Check out their new album Carry the Astronaut in 2007. Until then, check out three of their songs on their Myspace, www.myspace.com/lightsoftheaurora, or their Pure Volume, www.purevolume.com/lightsoftheaurora.
